  • The “F” word.

This Weekly Me is about the “F” word.  There are two we’re talking about; Faith and Fear.

We work hard to accept that just like the ocean, life has a current.  We work to let go and ride it without trying to control or predict where we will end up.  We let go of predicting or controlling where those close to us are meant to go.

We remain open to the whispers that come our way that are pulling us to where we are meant to be.  We accept that others are being led too.

We know we are all headed in the right direction.  We are absolutely 100% sure of it.

Then suddenly, as if a dark cloud appeared out of nowhere, we feel that icy pit in our stomach.  Things don’t move fast enough.  Someone said something to throw us off.  We are overwhelmed.  We begin to doubt that we heard the whisper.  Are we letting go too soon?  We begin to resist the current pulling us along.  Did we make the right choice?  We Fear what is around the corner.

It is a vicious cycle that we go round and round on.  We have Faith one day and Fear the next.  And why is that?

    It’s all a big test.

It is life saying to us how much have you learned?  How much have you progressed?  How much do you believe?  Do you have Faith in yourself and life?

The thing about Fear is that it disguises itself nicely.  In the midst of feeling it we believe it is real.  We think we are feeling it for a reason.  But it is not real and it is always self-inflicted.  When we feel Fear, no matter how it all started, it is always something we feed all on our own.

And as much as we are meant to have Faith it is not real either.  It is not something we can hold in our hand like a flower.  We can’t smell it or touch it.  We can’t give it away. Faith is not a “thing” but it is a gift we give to ourselves when we feel it.  When we have Faith it is the most powerful feeling imaginable.

We will always be tested, that is the nature of life.  There is no getting around the fact that in life it is necessary to take a walk through Fear.  If we can push through it we will understand what we are capable of and it will bring a deeper sense of Faith in who we are.  In a sense they go hand and hand.

Fear though has a nasty tendency of paralyzing us when it sinks its teeth in.  It wants to win.

There is a beautiful quote by Martin Luther King that often gets me through my moments of Fear.  “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”

Faith. Test.  Fear.  Faith. Test.  Fear.  Round and round.

The question becomes which “F” word are we going to let win when we are tested; Faith or Fear?

Fear still comes but I choose to have Faith.

    Until next time.
